Character History: Ever since Saki was a small child, she’s been able to hear voices in her head. She’s not crazy – the voices, as she struggled to relay to her family, came from everyone around her. She could hear bits of thoughts and emotions as if they were screamed directly into her brain. It became so difficult to ignore that even if she went outside on a walk with her parents, the noises would make her sick and she’d be unable to take it. Fortunately she was blessed with a loving and understanding family that did all they could to comfort her. But not even the happiest of families can always be there for you.

While still very young, Saki’s classmates bullied her about her complaints. They called her a witch, and relentlessly tormented her while she begged for mercy. The leader of the bullies, a small boy, convinced the other classmates the hold her down and make her eat a newt, as ‘proof’ she was a witch. When she did accidentally swallow it and they burst into harsh laughter and name-calling, Saki could take it no more. She directed all of her hate at that boy, and thought ‘I WISH YOU WOULD DIE!’ He then collapsed and had to be taken to the hospital. He survived, but Saki was horrified by what her abilities had nearly done. She waited for the police to come pick her up, since ‘bad people go to jail’.

While she was never arrested, and once again her family stood by her side, Saki found herself now terrified of what she could. In order to ensure it would never happen again, she isolated herself from everyone. She made no friends, spoke to no one, and ignored all the gossip and rumors about herself. She even started to dress all in black, as a way to make people avoid her. It worked for years, until she found herself in a new high school as the new kid. She didn’t expect sudden friendliness from two girls named Arisa and Tohru. They invited her to sit with them, and openly engaged conversation with her as if Saki was as normal as everyone else. Saki tried to rebuff their invitations, but they didn’t know how to take no for an answer. Saki even told them that the two are weird, but they just smiled and replied “We get that all the time!”

Despite her best attempt, Saki’s heart opened up to them, and she willingly came along to their group. However, when a fellow student confront Saki about ‘almost killing someone’, she ran away, thinking Tohru and Arisa wouldn’t want to be around someone so terrible. Yet the two went after her, insisting they loved Saki dearly and they were willing to listen to what happened. Saki was stunned to find people outside her family so open and trusting, and so she wept into Tohru’s embrace, relieved she finally had friends. With this newfound friendship came newfound strength – soon after their bond formed, Saki found a way to close off the ‘waves’ in her head whenever she pleased. She could still hear them, but now it was a matter of choice.

Thus as the school years went on for Saki and her friends, she decided to keep wearing black – on account of everyone else had adjusted to it and she had simply decided to roll along with it. Now that she had confidence in her powers, she felt free to use them, but only on those she thought deserved it. The moment she found out girls were picking on her beloved Tohru, she calmly threatened to use her powers to , in the manga’s words, *BEEEEEEEEEEP* them. She followed up on said threat when the bullies still harassed Tohru, winding up in causing one bully to sleep for several days.

It became obvious to the female bullies that if they wanted to ‘bring down Tohru’, they needed to bring down ‘the witch’, since Saki was known for protecting Tohru. Tohru had been hanging around with the class idol, Yuki Souma, and the girls were green with envy. They asked Saki if they could come over to her house (so they could find her weakness), to which Saki allowed. She played amusing mind games with them, utterly scaring them out of their wits thanks to her little brother, but also made it clear that their so-called love for Yuki was suffocation and illusion, as opposed to the real and deep love she had in her friendship with Tohru. The bullies didn’t exactly give up on Tohru, but they sure knew to stay away from Saki from now on. Saki later apologized to Yuki for calling him an illusion, which confused him greatly.

During the parent-teacher meetings, Saki was revealed to have failed her classes mostly so she could take them in summer when the air conditioning would be on. She stated at the time, her ‘future goal’ would be to be simply graduate, and her mother tearfully (and loudly) cheered her on. “YOU CAN DO IT, SAKIII!” During the rehearsals for the school’s Cinderella play, Saki was cast as Cinderella and Tohru as the wicked stepsister, as yet another attempt by the bullies to demean Tohru. It failed spectacularly, as Tohru couldn’t be wicked to a fly, and Saki happily comforted Tohru every chance she got. The script writer gave up and started from scratch, resulting in ‘Sorta-Cinderella’. In this version, Saki got to play Cinderella her way – the wicked stepmother threatened to take away the good and kind stepsister if Saki didn’t do her chores. Her fairy godmother (played by the mortified Yuki) offered her wishes, to which Saki first tried to get the palace burned down, rejected the prince’s offer, and eventually opened up a restaurant with her step-sister.

At the end of the play, Saki found herself enamored with Kazuma Souda, a dojo owner in his forties. She happily chatted with him while Kazuma’s semi-foster son Kyo watched in complete and utter horror.

Abilities/Special Powers: Saki is not exactly a mind-reader, as she can’t automatically know what you’re thinking. Instead, she ‘hears waves’ off of people. It’s a way of her to hear someone’s inner emotions, such as regret, anger, sadness, etc. For example, if someone was smiling brightly but feeling upset, she’d be able to know their true emotion, but not why they’re feeling it. She can also feel the last lingering emotions of the dead. Her powers also allow her to hurt others, if she uses them strongly enough. She can stop a person’s heart or make them fall into a small coma.

Third-Person Sample: Saki watched with faint amusement as Tohru fidgeted in the booth. Tohru was still upset that her friends were paying for this elaborate meal, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. They wouldn’t hear of it. Arguments like this were always useless, because when it came to showering Tohru with love, Saki and Arisa were a unbeatable team. Saki reached over, and began running her fingers through Tohru’s hair. Tohru was beautiful, and Saki felt a temptation to show her off to everyone else. “I’m the one ordering the most expensive meal.” She stated, crossing over lines of Tohru’s hair into pretty braids. “So I’m the one who should feel any sort of guilt…”

“Ah, you won’t.” Arisa chuckled, leaning over to check over to see if their water was back. Saki nodded once – yes, it was true, Saki wouldn’t feel guilty. If they were going to splurge on Tohru, why not splurge on all three? Besides, this restaurant had the most delicious shark meat in the city. Maybe she would take some home to Megumi, her little brother, as a reward for his good grades. She would have to insist Tohru ate a few pieces, since the girl had ordered the smallest meal available. Saki quietly finished the braiding job, realizing she hadn’t brought any ribbons to finish her hair with. What a pity.

“If you don’t eat a thing,” Saki put her arms around Tohru’s shoulders, and held her close to her chest. “I’ll eat you up. A tasty Tohru treat…” She rested her chin atop Tohru’s small, wiggling head. Arisa was laughing again, and for a brief moment, Saki allowed her head to open up. Sometimes Arisa’s waves of delight sounded like soft music playing in the background of her life. It contrasted with Tohru’s flighty guilt, popping against the delighted waves, and the mixture of this rhythm caused Saki to sigh. Nothing could complete with the orchestra of her friends.

First-Person Sample: Does anyone else wonder about our education while we are stuck here? I was already doing very poorly before I arrived, and when we do leave, I’ll probably be left back a grade.

Maybe the Queens had teachers, but the first time the women failed, it was “off with their heads”. Therefore, we could be the smartest people in all of Wonderland. I never thought I’d see the day where I’d be the smartest one around. Mother would be proud.

She’d also be yelling and wondering where in the world we were, but that’s a different story.
